Chapter Ten

Georgia stared up at Peter, her gaze caught on the primitive expression on his face.

His kiss had shocked her. It wasn’t even on her list of things she expected him to do with an unknown number of people rooting around in the shack above their heads. She’d watched as his head lowered, sick to her stomach with worry that they might be found, wondering what other important piece of information he had to whisper to her. It wasn’t until his lips touched hers that she understood that his intention had been to kiss her all along.

At first, he’d been gentle and kind, and so careful she’d wanted to scream. He pulled away after a few seconds of light contact, only to seize her mouth in a full body contact kiss that surprised and satisfied her. For a little while.

“I don’t know about safe,” Peter said as he stared down at her, his expression morphing into a blank mask. “But they’re gone.”

She wanted more now. Wanted all of him, but he was withdrawing, physically and emotionally.

“What’s our next step?” she asked, more to get him talking than for the actual information.

He sighed long and deep. “Stay out of sight.” He eased his hands under her and lifted her off his lap, setting her on the crate she’d abandoned earlier. “Get to the base without getting caught, shot, or blown to bits.”

A chill rolled through her at his stripped down, succinct list.

Well, she had asked. “Ok. Just tell me what I need to do or not do.”

His expression was pensive, but then he met her gaze, and he winced. “I shouldn’t have kissed you.”

Ouch.

Wait a second, he was acting like he’d done something illegal. they hadn’t done anything wrong. Had they? “Was it a pity kiss? Did you do it so I wouldn’t make any noise?”

“No.” The word burst out of him.

“Then why?”

“Why?” he repeated, as if the reason was self-evident.

“Yeah, why?”

He thunked his head against the dirt wall. “There’s a fucking list.”

She crossed her arms over her chest. This ought to be good. “Let’s hear it.”

“You want to hear it?” he asked, his voice a monotone.

“The entire list.”

He swore, then said flatly, “One, we’re hiding in a dark, dirty hole in the ground.”

He pulled away from the wall and met her gaze. “Two, we were a couple of feet away from being discovered hiding in a dark, dirty hole in the ground.”

He leaned forward. “Three, every law-enforcement officer in the country is looking for us and they probably expect us to be hiding in a dark, dirty hole in the ground.”

His gaze blazed with a combination of anger, anxiety, and something she couldn’t identify. “Four, I just killed a man in front of you.”

He swallowed hard. “Five, those fucking animals put their hands on you and scared the living shit out of you.”

He retreated but didn’t look away. “All of which makes me an unmitigated ass for kissing you.”

She leaned toward him and let a little of the anger she’d been keeping under lock and key out into her voice.
